Product Description

This course is designed for physiotherapists who work with children and infants who have been born preterm, have developmental delay or have musculoskeletal disorders of infancy. This course will assist participants to advance their knowledge in the areas of assessment, differential diagnosis, treatment and holistic management. This course is conducted primarily online over a 4 week period. During this time participants will be able to access course materials and complete course learning activities. The course concludes with a face to face day which participants attend. The face to face day allows hands on practice of some of the concepts already covered by the online content. Course materials include a mixture of images, written and web based learning materials, extended learning materials for advanced participants, and online assessment tasks.

This course is designed for physiotherapists who have some experience working in the area of paediatrics and is targeted at an advanced level of practice

The course is designed to require 8-10 hours time-commitment per week, completed at any time convenient to the participant.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course it is expected the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the phases of neonatal neurological development and the features of each developmental phase.
  • Describe the phases of neonatal respiratory development and the features of each developmental phase.
  • Describe the possible causes of cerebral palsy and relate these to the phases of neurological development in gestation and infancy where relevant.
  • Apply knowledge of typical neonatal and infant development to the clinical physiotherapy management of neonates and infants.
  • Recognise typically developing movement and postural behaviour of neonates and infants.
  • Identify standardised outcome measures appropriate for assessment of the neonatal and infant population.
  • Define the principles of developmental care and apply these to clinical practice with the neonatal population.
  • Identify standardised outcome measures appropriate for assessment of the neonatal and infant population.
  • Identify multiple physiotherapy strategies to address deviations from typical development in the neonatal and infant populations.
  • Describe a comprehensive musculoskeletal physiotherapy assessment of the new-born and the infant.
  • Describe the management of common musculoskeletal disorders of infancy, including torticollis, plagiocephaly, brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP), positional vs structural clubfoot / talipes, developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Course Convenor & Facilitator

Dr. Prue Morgan, Head of Monash University School of Physiotherapy and Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist (as awarded by Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2008) is the course convenor.

The course content has been developed by a team of physiotherapists who have many years of experience working in the area of paediatrics. Namely: Janet Hough, Fiona Cran, Cate Clancy, Laura Morel, Dr Adrienne Harvey and Katy de Valle.

Course Facilitator

Katy de Valle is the course facilitator and is a senior research physiotherapist working in neuromuscular diseases at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.

Course Requirements

The majority of the course learning resources will be provided within Moodle, an online learning site within Monash University.

Technology Requirements

It is assumed you will have sufficient computer literacy to be able to:

  1. Send email.
  2. Receive email and open attachments including PDF, Word, video files.
  3. Type at approximately 20 words per minute

To complete the course you will require:

  1. A PC that is relatively recent
  2. Broadband internet access (cable, ADSL or ADSL2)
  3. A web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari
  4. The ability to view PDF files, Word documents, YouTube videos and video file
