Product Description

This course is designed for physiotherapists who work with children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. This course will assist participants to advance their knowledge regarding the diagnosis, treatment and management of CP across the age span. This course is conducted primarily online over a 4 week period. During this time participants will be able to access course materials and complete course learning activities. The course concludes with a face to face day which participants attend. The face to face day allows hands on practice of some of the concepts already covered by the online content. Course materials include a mixture of images, written and web based learning materials, extended learning materials for advanced participants, and online assessment tasks.

This course is designed for physiotherapists who have some experience working in the area of paediatrics and is targeted at an advanced level of practice.

The course is designed to require 8-10 hours time - commitment per week, completed at any time convenient to the participant. 

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

    1. Have an understanding of embryology in regards to the timing of cerebral insults that result in a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.
    2. Have an understanding of the common risk factors that lead to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.
    3. Be able to identify and select appropriate outcome measures for children with cerebral palsy across the age span.
    4. Have an understanding of hip surveillance requirements in cerebral palsy and how the management differs across GMFCS levels.
    5. Be able to identify and understand the principles of management of various movement disorders.
    6. Appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of burst versus ongoing therapy prescription.
    7. Be able to apply the principles of advanced gait correction via orthotic prescription, and to illustrate these through case studies.
    8. Understand the rationale for the timing of medical interventions eg. Medications, botox, SDR, ITB, surgery.
    9. Have an understanding of the complexity of equipment prescription in cerebral palsy across the life span.
    10. Have an understanding of the complexities around transition from paediatric to adult services.
    11. Be able to tailor outcome measurement for different ages based on the ICF.

Course Convenor & Facilitator

Dr Prue Morgan, Head of Monash University School of Physiotherapy and Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist (as awarded by Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2008) is the course convenor.

The course content has been developed by a team of physiotherapists who have many years of experience working in the area of paediatrics. Namely: Dr Prue Morgan, Janet Hough, Fiona Cran, Cate Clancy, Marlene Stapper, Dr Adrienne Harvey and Katy de Valle.

Course Facilitator

Katy de Valle is the course facilitator and is a senior research physiotherapist working in neuromuscular diseases at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.

Course Requirements

The majority of the course learning resources will be provided within Moodle, an online learning site within Monash University.

Technology Requirements

It is assumed you will have sufficient computer literacy to be able to:

  1. Send email.
  2. Receive email and open attachments including PDF, Word, video files.
  3. Type at approximately 20 words per minute

To complete the course you will require:

  1. A PC that is relatively recent
  2. Broadband internet access (cable, ADSL or ADSL2)
  3. A web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari
  4. The ability to view PDF files, Word documents, YouTube videos and video file
