Product Description

This course is designed for physiotherapy graduates who have an interest in or have a caseload of paediatric clients. This course could provide participants with the direction and confidence to manage paediatric clients and may provide a stepping stone to further study in the area. This course is conducted primarily online over a 4 week period. During this time participants will be able to access course materials and complete course learning activities. The course concludes with a face to face day which participants attend. The face to face day allows hands on practice of some of the concepts already covered by the online content. Course materials include a mixture of videos, written and web based learning materials, extended learning materials for advanced participants, and online assessment tasks.

The course is designed to require 8-10 hours time-commitment per week, completed at any time convenient to the participant.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of normal development across the spectrum of childhood, within the context of normal variations.
  • Identify paediatric conditions which are appropriate for physiotherapy intervention.
  • Recognise the scope of a comprehensive paediatric physiotherapy assessment.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the elements of a comprehensive paediatric physiotherapy assessment for children presenting with cardiothoracic, musculoskeletal or neurological conditions.
  • Identify appropriate assessment tools for specific paediatric conditions.
  • Conduct prioritised systematic assessments for different paediatric conditions across the spectrum of childhood and adolescence.
  • Determine the child's main problems based on the assessment findings.
  • Identify and communicate the important findings of their paediatric physiotherapy assessments that warrant further assessment and / or intervention and / or referral to other practitioners, especially 'red flags'.
  • Set SMART goals for the child in conjunction with their family.
  • Identify and apply appropriate evidenced based or best practice interventions to specific paediatric conditions.
  • Demonstrate sensitive and appropriate communication at all times when working with children, their parents / grandparents / carers.
  • Demonstrate appropriate and professional communication with other health care professionals, both internal and external to their own health care setting.
  • Identify limits to their own practice and recognise when to request assistance from senior physiotherapy or relevant clinician within or external to their own workplace.
  • Demonstrate competence and confidence to work autonomously as the physiotherapist for paediatric inpatients, for example on weekend shifts, or community/ambulatory clients whilst always identifying limits to their own practice and calling for assistance when appropriate.

Course Convenor & Facilitator

Dr. Prue Morgan is the course convenor and head of the Department of Physiotherapy at Monash University.

The course content has been developed by a team of physiotherapists who have many years of experience working in the area of paediatrics. Namely: Janet Hough, Fiona Cran, Cate Clancy, Laura Morel, Dr Adrienne Harvey and Katy de Valle.

Course Facilitator

Katy de Valle is the course facilitator and is a senior research physiotherapist working in neuromuscular diseases at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.

Course Requirements

The majority of the course learning resources will be provided within Moodle, an online learning site within Monash University.


Technology Requirements

It is assumed you will have sufficient computer literacy to be able to:

  1. Send email.
  2. Receive email and open attachments including PDF, word, video files.
  3. Type at approximately 20 words per minute

To complete the course you will require:

  1. A PC that is relatively recent
  2. Broadband internet access (cable, ADSL or ADSL2)
  3. A web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari
  4. The ability to view PDF files, word documents, YouTube videos and video file
